Meet Our Farmers

The VEGGI Farmers Cooperative was established following the effects of the BP oil spill on the Vietnamese community in New Orleans. With many community members losing their jobs because of the spill, VEGGI was developed to provide sustainable economic opportunities in urban agriculture. In late 2011, we trained 12 community members to utilize aquaponics and greenhouse technology through a curriculum which provided microgrants to these community members to have these systems built on their property, using them to grow fresh, quality produce.

Meet some of our farmers:

Phú Nguyễn

What did you do before you join VEGGI Group?

“Before Hurricane Katrina, I worked at a body shop fixing cars.  After the hurricane and I returned home, I lost my job so I mowed lawns for a living.  Afterward, last year, MQVNCDC were looking for people to participate in the VEGGI program and I was really happy to participate.  I was one of the 1st participant and was really happy with MQVNCDC accepting me in the program to further the growth of the program.”

Why did you become involve with VEGGI?

“I became involved with VEGGI because I saw this as a benefit for everyone and their family.  It is a benefit and it is amazing.  We can sell the vegetables, eat them, give them as gifts and also keep us healthy.”

What do you like about Veggi?

“I like the product to be consistent, the pricing to be reasonable and for the products to be favorable. That is why I like the group.”

Thanh Nguyễn

What did you do before you join VEGGI Group?

“We have not worked for a long time, we were retired people.  Before VEGGI, we went fishing.  We went out.  We also have a small garden of veggie we grew to eat.”

Why did you become involve with VEGGI?

“We became involved with VEGGI because we didn’t have much to do as retired folk.   We liked the group and liked growing. We want to do it to make us happy.”

What do you like about Veggi?

“What we like about the VEGGI program is the youth, the people in the program.  They made us happy.  And when we grow vegetables, and they are green and healthy we are happy.  If the vegetables are not green and healthy, then we are not happy.”DSCF0466
